"HVAC" refers to heating, ventilation, and air conditioning. An HVAC system is built into many homes. The same ducts, vents and coils that are used to heat the house in cold weather are used to cool the home in hot weather.

When the central air conditioner is working, hot air inside the house is directed through an air duct and blown across cooled evaporator coils. The cooled-off air is then forced through more ducts and back into the house.

There are a number of reasons why an air conditioning system may stop working. Diagnosing the problem is the first step in air conditioning repairs. Once you understand why the system is not working, you can decide if it is time to call in the professionals.

If you turn on the air conditioner and can hear it running, but the house stays warm, you may simply need to turn down the thermostat, so try that first. If the house continues to stay warm, the problem may be with the evaporator or condenser.

Turn off the air conditioning. Make sure the condenser is not blocked by leaves or other debris. Then clean around the coils. Clean the evaporator. If you do not know how, ask a professional to show you. And if cleaning does not fix the problem, it is time to call a professional troubleshoot your HVAC system.

If the air conditioning keeps turning on and off, cleaning will probably fix the problem. If it does not, please call a professional.

If the condenser will not run, meaning you cannot turn the air conditioner on at all, check your breakers and make sure there are no power outage issues. Lower the thermostat. If the air conditioning will still not turn on after you have taken these measures, you likely have a faulty motor or faulty compressor. For these problems, you must call a professional.
